Obliteration

Obliteration came back from Battlefield 4 on Jun 9, 2026: up to 64 players race for one neutral bomb and try to plant it on the enemy's M-COM stations, and the first team to destroy all three enemy M-COMs wins. Tactical Obliteration, the renamed Squad Obliteration, followed on Jun 30, 2026 as an 8v8 infantry version where two M-COMs win.

Obliteration is a bomb-carrying mode that Battlefield 6 brought back from Battlefield 4 on Jun 9, 2026: a single neutral bomb spawns in the middle of the map, both teams fight to grab it and carry it to one of the other team's three M-COM stations, and the first team to destroy all three enemy M-COMs wins. EA calls it "Battlefield at its most competitive, supporting up to 64 players on some of the game's largest maps". Three weeks later EA added Tactical Obliteration, the 8v8 infantry version once known as Squad Obliteration, where destroying two of three M-COMs is enough. In the clip, jackfrags starts his first Obliteration match on Jun 22, 2026, admitting he was not a fan of the Battlefield 4 version.

Quick facts

Players Up to 64 (Obliteration); 16, 8v8 (Tactical Obliteration)
Goal Destroy three enemy M-COMs (two in Tactical)
Bombs One neutral bomb; a second appears 7 minutes before time runs out (Obliteration only)
Lives Unlimited respawns, no tickets
Overtime Yes, when tied with a bomb in play
Vehicles Yes in Obliteration; none in Tactical
Added Obliteration Jun 9, 2026 (1.3.2.0, Blastpoint); Tactical Jun 30, 2026 (1.3.3.0, High-Value Target)
Origin Battlefield 4 (2013); Squad Obliteration in its Winter Update

How Obliteration works

At the start of the match "a single neutral bomb spawns in one of several locations in the middle of the map". Anyone can pick it up, on foot or in a vehicle, and the bomb always shows on the minimap, whoever holds it. The bomb is live from the moment it is picked up: carry it too long without planting and it explodes in the carrier's hands and drops for anyone to take. Left on the ground, it explodes again after a short time and resets to a spawn point in midfield.

Planting on an M-COM takes several seconds, as in Rush. A planted bomb that is not defused explodes and scores a point for the planting team. A defender who defuses it automatically picks it up. M-COM sites are defended by stationary turrets and extra vehicle spawns. There are no tickets: both teams respawn without limit, and EA notes that a revive still brings a soldier back nearer the fight than a respawn. As jackfrags says in the clip, it is unusual for Battlefield: both teams attack and defend at the same time.

Win conditions and overtime

The match ends when one team's three M-COMs are destroyed, or when time runs out with one team ahead. In jackfrags' first round on Railway to Golmud the clip shows a new bomb spawning and, for a moment, two bombs on the map. Two rules break ties:

  1. The second bomb. Seven minutes before the time limit, a second bomb appears at one of the central spawn points, opening a second route to a score.
  2. Overtime. If the score is tied with at least one bomb in play or planted, the match continues. Each bomb then has one timer that does not reset when picked up, a planted M-COM explodes "more than three times faster than normal play", and a bomb that explodes before planting or a disarmed M-COM removes that bomb. The first team to destroy an M-COM in overtime wins; otherwise it is a draw.

Draws do happen. jackfrags' first round ended in overtime at one M-COM each and was called a draw, which surprised him in the clip.

Tactical Obliteration

Tactical Obliteration arrived with update 1.3.3.0 on Jun 30, 2026. EA says it is "the new name for Squad Obliteration", which first came to Battlefield 4 in its Winter Update and became a staple of the competitive community.

Obliteration Tactical Obliteration
Players Up to 64 16, two squads against two
Maps Large Smaller
Vehicles Yes None
M-COMs to win 3 of 3 2 of 3
Bombs One, then a second 7 minutes before the end One only, even in overtime
Fuse Standard Much shorter
Time limit Longer Shorter
Enemy carrier Always on the minimap Blinks onto the minimap every few seconds

Because the enemy carrier is not always visible, losing track of the bomb is part of the mode, and EA's guide suggests the Recon's Portable Jammer to hide the soldiers escorting a carrier. Since only two M-COMs win, EA also suggests a "strategic sacrifice play": let the enemy take the hardest station to defend and hold the other two.

Changes since launch

  • Jun 30, 2026 (1.3.3.0): Obliteration backfills with bots to fill servers and meet the start conditions; bombs no longer get trapped under debris piles; the squad leader's ping menu shows the bomb only when it can be pinged, with the right pickup, intercept and escort text. The same update gave Portal creators Obliteration support in the SDK.
  • Jul 15, 2026: EA said the return of Obliteration had "generated more than 413 million hours" of play.

That 413 million figure deserves care. In the same post EA said Railway to Golmud, the most played new map of Season 3, had a little over 16 million hours, and that Conquest, Breakthrough and Battle Royale were within roughly 200 million hours of one another for the whole season. A mode about three weeks old outplaying the season's most played map by more than twenty times does not fit those numbers. We think EA's figure counts something wider than hours in Obliteration matches, or carries a units error; either way we would not use it to say Obliteration was the most played mode.

How to win Obliteration

From EA's ten tips, with the reasons they work:

  • Win the kickoff, or skip it. The opening scramble for the bomb is chaos. Either grab it fast or use the first minutes to set up at your M-COMs or clear an enemy site ahead of the carrier.
  • Never camp a live bomb. A carried bomb explodes if it is not planted. Move.
  • Bring an Assault to the plant. The Assault's Mission Focused trait speeds plants and defuses for nearby allies; stay close to the carrier.
  • Drive the vehicles. EA asks Combat Engineers to take the tanks so the enemy cannot, and Anti-Armor Engineers to keep enemy vehicles out of the fight. Transports have faster cooldowns and a helicopter is a mobile spawn.
  • Keep the squad alive. A Support's faster revives and defibrillator save the walk back from HQ.
  • Watch the clock. At seven minutes left, send a squad toward where the second bomb can spawn.
  • Plant fast in overtime. M-COMs blow more than three times faster; one quick plant, or one quick defuse with an Assault nearby, ends it.

For Tactical Obliteration, EA adds: warm up on the Firing Range, keep comms tight, learn the eight enemies' habits, cut the carrier off on the way to the M-COM instead of chasing, and give up one station if it means holding two.

We think Obliteration's return is the best use Battlefield 6 has made of the series' back catalog: Tactical Obliteration revived Battlefield 4's best-loved competitive format, and both modes reused existing maps instead of waiting for new ones. Our view is that Tactical Obliteration is the strongest candidate for the competitive multiplayer play EA keeps promising: EA's Multiplayer Ranked has no date as of Nov 8, 2026, and a 16-player, two-of-three-station mode is the easiest of its modes to rank and to spectate. That is our prediction, not EA's plan; see Predictions.

What creators found

After three matches on Railway to Golmud, Eastwood and Contaminated, jackfrags warns in his Jun 22, 2026 video that some players will find Obliteration "a bit too mental" because it focuses 64 players on one location, bringing everyone together "in a way that Conquest doesn't". His Eastwood round ended with all three M-COMs destroyed in about 12 minutes.

His verdict, in the clip: "Way better than the BF4 version", with the caveat that 32 teammates who cannot easily talk to each other can make a bad team frustrating, which he hoped proximity chat would fix. EA's multiplayer proximity chat is still in development as of Nov 8, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Jun 9, 2026, with update 1.3.2.0 and the Season 3 Blastpoint phase. Tactical Obliteration followed on Jun 30, 2026.

How many players are in Obliteration?

Up to 64 on the larger maps; Tactical Obliteration is 8v8.

What is the difference between Obliteration and Rush?

In Rush one team attacks fixed M-COMs and the other defends; in Obliteration both teams attack and defend at once, racing for one bomb that either side can carry.

Is Squad Obliteration in Battlefield 6?

Yes, under the name Tactical Obliteration.
