Campaign
Battlefield 6's campaign is a nine-mission single-player story that follows Dagger 13, a US Marine Raider squad, against the private army Pax Armata. It takes about four to six hours, has four difficulties and 30 dog tags, and its rewards carry into multiplayer.
Battlefield 6's campaign is a nine-mission single-player story, made mainly by Motive, in which a Marine Raider squad called Dagger 13 fights Pax Armata, a private army backed by countries that left NATO. EA's campaign page (Oct 10, 2025) sets the scene: the 70-year-old alliance is close to collapse, and the United States sends Dagger 13 "to flashpoints around the world" to hold it together. It is the series' first campaign since Battlefield V and its first in a modern setting since Hardline, a gap IGN's reviewer opens his review with. IGN timed it at nine missions and about five hours and called it a "safe reimagining" of older Battlefield; most critics liked the multiplayer far more. This page covers the campaign as a whole; the levels are on Campaign Missions, the plot on Campaign Story and Ending, the squad on Dagger 13 and Characters and the enemy on Pax Armata.

What the campaign is about
The story opens in Georgia on Sep 17, 2027, when Pax Armata attacks a NATO base that is being handed over to it. A news report later in the game recaps what followed: days after the attack, NATO's Secretary General was assassinated in Brussels, Pax claimed it, and several former members joined the coalition of states backing the private army. EA's The Story So Far calls Pax "a private military company with global reach and ambition". Every mission after the first is a flashback, framed by present-day scenes of the squad confronting their CIA handler, Melissa Mills (GameRant's explainer). The full plot, with spoilers, is on Campaign Story and Ending.
How long is the campaign?
Most players finish in four to six hours. IGN's Simon Cardy put it at "nine missions and just 5 hours" (Oct 9, 2025). Dexerto (Oct 9, 2025) gives "around 4-6 hours" and a first run on the standard difficulty of about four and a half hours. MKIceAndFire's no-commentary run uploaded on Oct 10, 2025, lasts 4 hours 41 minutes including every cutscene. The campaign is linear, with no side activities beyond collectibles and per-mission challenges (PCGamesN, Oct 13, 2025), so a 100% run adds mainly the time spent hunting dog tags and replaying missions on Hardcore.
How it plays
The missions are cover shooters in tight streets and corridors, broken up by vehicle sections, a tank mission and one wider level. IGN found that "a run and gun mentality simply isn't welcomed" and that patience behind cover wins, though it praised the weight of the gunplay, the assault rifles and LMGs and the destruction that can blow apart the building you are hiding in.
Each squadmate has a class-flavored ability you call on in a fight, echoing the four multiplayer Classes. Gecko, the Recon, tags every enemy in an area, which IGN says can make some fights "ridiculously easy"; the reviewer wished the squad's skills played more differently. The player also never flies a jet or a helicopter, the thing IGN missed most from a game called Battlefield.
Some multiplayer tools turn up in story form. In the first mission, the squad uses a laser designator to mark Pax armor for an air strike, the job the Recon's Laser Designator does online, in MKIceAndFire's Oct 10, 2025 run. Later levels hand you a recon drone, ATVs and armored trucks, and a tank.
Difficulty levels
EA's campaign page lists four settings, and the gap between them is mostly health, damage and revives:
| Difficulty | Health regen | Enemy damage | Revives (defibrillator charges) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recruit | Fastest | Lower | Up to 3 |
| Normal | Standard | Standard | Up to 2 |
| Veteran | Slower | Higher | 1 |
| Hardcore | Slower than Veteran | Much higher | None |

Beating every mission on Hardcore unlocks the "Elegant Ballistics" weapon package for the B36A3 assault rifle (EA). Finishing one mission on the hardest difficulty is enough for the Peak Performance trophy (MP1st, Oct 1, 2025), so you can take the trophy early and save the full Hardcore run for the camo.
Dog tags and campaign challenges
The campaign hides 30 dog tags across its nine missions. Finding every tag in a mission completes that mission's Campaign Challenge, which you can track under Challenges, then Campaign. Each set of tags pays a reward, and finding all 30 unlocks the "Winner Take All" dog tag (NME, Oct 12, 2025). The collectible trophies step up at 1, 5, 10 and 20 tags and finish with Pack Leader for all of them (MP1st). Mission-by-mission advice is on Campaign Missions, and every trophy is on Achievements and Trophies.
Rewards that carry into multiplayer
Campaign unlocks land in your multiplayer and REDSEC inventory: skins, XP boosters, a weapon package and a golden dog tag, in EA's summary. NME lists them all (Oct 12, 2025):
| Earned by | Reward |
|---|---|
| Finishing Always Faithful | Infiltrator player card title |
| Finishing Operation Gladius | Raging Waters background |
| Finishing No Sleep | Home Invasion background |
| Finishing Moving Mountains | Shield Bearer title |
| Finishing Always Forward | Bighorn HK-16 melee weapon and Carnivore RPKM weapon package |
| Every mission on the hardest difficulty | Elegant Ballistics weapon package |
| A mission with only melee, grenades and gadgets | Polar Nexus camo |
| A mission without being revived | Deadheader title |
| A mission using only a pistol | Hardware XP Booster |
| 30 headshots in one mission | Breach background |
| 10 melee kills in one mission | Safeties On icon |
| All 30 dog tags | Winner Take All dog tag |
The Rock, Night Raid, Nile Guard and Operation Ember Strike give "Standard Issue" character items, and each mission's dog tag set adds a skin, icon, camo or booster of its own (NME). The XP boosters are the reward multiplayer players notice most, since they speed up Progression and Unlocks.
Who made it
EA's Battlefield Studios post (Oct 10, 2025) credits Motive, the Montreal studio behind the Dead Space remake and Star Wars: Squadrons, with "deep narrative design and single-player campaign" work, while DICE leads the core multiplayer. Criterion worked on the campaign alongside Motive, and general manager Bryson Beede told PCGamesN (Jul 31, 2025) the team wanted to "bring storytelling back to Battlefield". The studios and their people are on Battlefield Studios.
IGN's reviewer, talking with Tom Marks after the review, made a fair point in the campaign's favor: it is not stitched together from multiplayer maps. Its missions were built for it, in areas that are not in the online game, with a story running through them.
What critics said
Reviews treated the campaign as the weak half of a strong game. Digital Foundry (Oct 9, 2025) called it "a very linear shooter campaign in the Call of Duty style" with thin plot justification and mostly small-scale fights, singling out Operation Ember Strike as the one mission with real freedom and noting "a decent little romp if you come in with reasonable expectations".
gameranx's Before You Buy (Oct 10, 2025) was blunter: the reviewer "didn't like it", found it a drag and felt it rang hollow, while praising the multiplayer that most buyers come for.
The scores bear that out. IGN gave the campaign alone 5/10 (Simon Cardy, Oct 9, 2025; OpenCritic notes the score covers only the campaign), and PC Gamer ran the headline "the campaign's a misfire". Eurogamer called it "a decent, if derivative single-player" and Game Informer wished it "reflected the grittiness of its multiplayer" (OpenCritic, read Nov 8, 2026), while still scoring the whole game 4/5 and 8.5. The full scores are on Reception and Reviews.
How many players finish it
Steam's global achievement page (Steam, read Nov 8, 2026) shows how far players get. Stand Alone, for finishing the first mission, is held by 22.4% of Steam players; Rock of Gibraltar, for the two Gibraltar missions, by 15.9%; Cloak and Dagger, for finishing the campaign, by 9.5%.
| Steam achievement | Campaign progress | Players (Nov 8, 2026) | Share of those who finished mission 1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stand Alone | Mission 1 | 22.4% | 100% |
| Rock of Gibraltar | Missions 2 and 3 | 15.9% | 71% |
| Devil in the Dark | Mission 4 | 14.0% | 63% |
| Secret Service | Missions 5 and 6 | 11.2% | 50% |
| High Roller | Mission 7 | 10.6% | 47% |
| Damned If You Do | Mission 8 | 10.0% | 45% |
| Cloak and Dagger | The whole campaign | 9.5% | 42% |
The last column is our own arithmetic from Steam's figures. We think it tells a clearer story than the review scores: fewer than one Steam player in four finished even the first mission, but of those who finished the prologue, about 42% saw the ending, and the steepest drop (more than a quarter) comes in Gibraltar, the missions with the museum tunnels IGN called a relic of old shooter design. Once players reach New York they mostly stay to the end.
Is the campaign worth playing?
We think it is worth one sitting if you already own the game, and not worth buying the game for. It is short, linear and handsome, and its New York and Tajikistan missions show what a larger Battlefield campaign could be. We think the rewards make the case on their own for multiplayer players: two XP boosters, a melee weapon and an RPKM weapon package come from a few hours that also teach the gadgets you will use online. If you only want a story, IGN's reviewer pointed to the Bad Company games and Battlefield 1 as the series' better campaigns; they are covered on Battlefield Series.
