Game Modes
Battlefield 6 launched with eight multiplayer modes, four All-Out Warfare modes (Conquest, Breakthrough, Rush, Escalation) and four smaller infantry modes, and has since added Obliteration, Tactical Obliteration, Strikepoint and a run of limited-time modes. As of Nov 8, 2026 official matchmaking runs fewer, rotating playlists.
Battlefield 6 launched on Oct 10, 2025 with eight multiplayer modes plus Portal: four All-Out Warfare modes (Conquest, Breakthrough, Rush and the new Escalation) and four smaller "tactical" modes (Squad Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Domination and King of the Hill). A year of seasons added Obliteration and Tactical Obliteration from Battlefield 4, the 4v4 Strikepoint, the 8v8 Sabotage and a string of limited-time modes, from the freezing Ice Lock to the Dead Space crossover. This page lists every one in a line with its player count and where it is played; each mode has its own page for the rules and tactics. The free battle royale and its modes are on REDSEC. In the clip, gameranx's Oct 10, 2025 "Before You Buy" counts the nine maps and "technically eight game modes" at launch.

Every mode at a glance
Player counts below are EA's where EA gives one. For the launch modes EA's own mode guide gives no numbers, so those come from TheGamer's mode guide of Oct 10, 2025, and a playlist can run a different size (a Casual or Initiation playlist fills with bots, and Breakthrough runs 48 on some maps).
| Mode | Type | Players | How you win | Arrived | Status, Nov 8, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conquest | All-Out Warfare | 64 (32v32) | Drain the enemy's tickets by kills and held flags | Launch | Standard |
| Breakthrough | All-Out Warfare, attack and defend | 64, or 48 on six maps | Attackers take every sector; defenders run out their tickets | Launch | Standard |
| Rush | Attack and defend | 24 (12v12) | Attackers destroy every M-COM pair | Launch | Standard |
| Escalation | All-Out Warfare | Up to 64 (EA: "up to 32 players" a side) | First to three territories (EA) | Launch, new | Standard |
| Obliteration | All-Out Warfare | Up to 64 (EA) | Destroy three enemy M-COMs with the neutral bomb | Jun 9, 2026 | Rotating |
| Tactical Obliteration | Infantry | 16 (8v8, EA) | Two of three M-COMs | Jun 30, 2026 | Rotating |
| Team Deathmatch | Infantry | 16 (8v8) | First to 100 kills | Launch | Standard |
| Squad Deathmatch | Infantry | 16 (four squads of four) | First squad to 50 kills | Launch | Standard |
| Domination | Infantry | 16 (8v8) | First to 200 points from held flags | Launch | Standard |
| King of the Hill | Infantry | 16 (8v8) | Points for holding one moving zone | Launch | Standard |
| Strikepoint | Infantry, one life | 8 (4v4, EA) | First to six rounds | Oct 28, 2025 | Out, "still has bugs" (EA, Oct 21, 2026) |
| Sabotage | Infantry, limited | 16 (8v8, EA) | Destroy more cargo than the other team | Nov 18, 2025 | Limited-time event mode |
| Naval Warfare | Vehicles at sea | Conquest-size | Rules of the mode played | Jul 21, 2026 | On Tsuru Reef and Wake Island |
Every infantry-mode rule is on Infantry Modes; every event mode (Ice Lock, VL-7 Strike, Nightfall, Operation Augur, Top Gun: Carrier Strike, Marker Incursion) is on Limited-Time Modes. Naval combat is a vehicle layer more than a mode of its own, so it lives on Naval Warfare and Boats.
All-Out Warfare: the big modes
EA calls Conquest, Breakthrough, Rush and Escalation "the four modes most closely associated with Battlefield's iconic gameplay". Conquest is the symmetrical flag fight on the largest Combat Zones. Breakthrough splits the map into sectors that attackers must take one at a time. Rush is the same attack-and-defend idea at 12v12 around pairs of M-COM radio stations. Escalation, the only new mode at launch, starts with many flags and removes one every time a team takes a territory, so the fight is pushed into the middle. In the clip, IGN's Oct 16, 2025 multiplayer review calls the 64-player battles of Breakthrough and Conquest the standouts.
Obliteration joined them on Jun 9, 2026, when update 1.3.2.0 brought it back from Battlefield 4 with the Cairo Bazaar map. EA claimed the mode passed "more than 413 million hours" by Jul 15, 2026, in the same post that said Conquest, Breakthrough and Battle Royale were within roughly 200 million hours of each other through Season 3. In the clip, jackfrags sits down to his first match of it on Jun 22, 2026.
Which mode is most played?
EA has never published a ranking. The nearest is that Jul 15, 2026 post: Conquest, Breakthrough and REDSEC's Battle Royale were the three closest contenders, within about 200 million player hours of one another across Season 3. We think Conquest still leads multiplayer by a small margin: it is the mode EA's own designers start every map from (they lay out Conquest and Breakthrough first), it was the first mode Custom Lobbies supported, and it is the mode that every map, from Saints Quarter's small zones to Tsuru Reef, carries.
Player counts: where sources disagree
EA describes its launch modes in words, not numbers, so most of the counts you see online come from press guides written on launch day. Two disagreements matter (in the clip, EA's own Escalation explainer settles the first: "All you need to win is three points"):
- Escalation. EA's Escalation guide says "two sides of up to 32 players" and "the first team to take three territories wins". TheGamer's launch guide gives 64 players and seven flags but says first to two. EA's three is the rule; this viki uses it.
- Breakthrough. All Breakthrough maps were 64 players shortly after launch, then on Nov 13, 2025 six of them dropped to 48 with no announcement, as FRVR reported the next day: only Mirak Valley and Operation Firestorm kept 64. EA has made no statement about it, so read those numbers as observed, not official.
Rush was cut to 24 players at launch, a smaller Rush than the 32v32 of recent Battlefields; why and what fans made of it is on Rush. It arrived late in the beta too: TheGamer's Aug 14, 2025 explainer, in the clip, notes Rush was only added for the second beta weekend and that "Rush is not very good in the beta".
Casual, Initiation and closed-weapon playlists
New players are pointed at the Initiation playlists first. EA's Battlefield 101 calls Breakthrough Initiation "every new recruit's first step", the same mode with bots in a learning environment. Casual Breakthrough, with smaller teams and bots, followed on Nov 1, 2025. Stats are not tracked in any Casual or Portal mode that fills with bots, a line EA prints under every one of its posts. Official playlists also offer closed weapon versions of the modes, where each class is held to its own weapon types, with full XP. They were there from the beta: TheGamer's Aug 14, 2025 explainer, in the clip, calls Closed Weapon Conquest "classic Battlefield", with weapons locked to each class.
Fewer playlists, rotating modes
By mid-2026 the list of modes had grown long enough to split players. EA said on Jul 30, 2026 that "too many split playlists fragment the player base and lead to bot-heavy lobbies" and that it was consolidating official matchmaking into fewer, high-traffic playlists with modes rotating in and out. That is why Obliteration, Operation Augur or Escalation may be in the menu one week and gone the next. EA's answer for players who want one mode all the time is the server browser, which starts a staged rollout after Nov 10, 2026 with filters by map and mode; it is covered on Portal and Server Browser. Portal is also where removed modes live on: Gauntlet left REDSEC's playlists on Oct 13, 2026 but stays as a verified Portal mode, and King of the Hill and Domination became Portal Verified Modes on Sep 15, 2026.
What is coming next
Two things are dated as of Nov 8, 2026. The Casino Heist phase on Nov 10, 2026 brings the infantry-only European Casino map, with Contracts dropped by defeated enemies in every mode (EA's Casino Heist guide). Frozen Aces on Dec 8, 2026 brings "Operation High Roller" and the Freezeout event. EA has not said what Operation High Roller is. We think it is the second Operation, the multi-map mode format of Operation Augur, set on the Las Vegas maps: EA said in July it has "bigger plans for Operations coming in future seasons", and Vegas Strip, Area 51 and European Casino make the same surface-to-underground chain Contaminated and Hagental Base did. That is our reading, not EA's; see Predictions. Enders reads it the same way in the clip from his Oct 11, 2026 Season 5 video, calling it "another operations mode" and guessing it runs from the Vegas Strip into the casino or Area 51.
Still not dated: Multiplayer Ranked and Strikepoint's return. Commander Mode is not planned at all (EA, Oct 21, 2026). The wider plan is on Roadmap and Season 6.
Frequently asked questions
How many game modes does Battlefield 6 have?
Eight at launch on Oct 10, 2025. As of Nov 8, 2026 the permanent list counts ten with Obliteration and Tactical Obliteration, plus Strikepoint (out of rotation), the limited-time Sabotage and six event modes. Portal adds any number of player-made ones.
What is the biggest mode in Battlefield 6?
Conquest, Escalation, Obliteration and Top Gun: Carrier Strike all run up to 64 players, 32 a side. Battlefield 6 has no 128-player mode; the 100-player matches are REDSEC's battle royale.
Which mode is best for new players?
Breakthrough Initiation, which EA itself recommends: the full mode with bots, in a learning environment. After that, Conquest gives the most room to learn a class without the pressure of a single front line.
Is there a Hardcore mode?
Not in official playlists. EA pointed players to FaithWalker's Hardcore experience in Portal on Oct 21, 2026, as an example of a community mode that became popular.
Is Commander Mode in Battlefield 6?
No. EA said on Jul 30, 2026 and again on Oct 21, 2026 that it has no plans to add it.

REDSECBattlefield REDSEC is Battlefield 6's free-to-play battle royale, out since Oct 28, 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. As of Season 5 (Nov 8, 2026) it offers Battle Royale on Fort Lyndon, Ranked, Casual and Rapid Royale, and shares its progression and battle pass with Battlefield 6.
-
ConquestConquest is Battlefield 6's 64-player flag mode: two teams of 32 capture lettered objectives, and a team loses when its tickets (1,000 by EA's default) run out from deaths without revives and from the other side holding more flags. Holding every flag for a minute wins outright.
-
BreakthroughBreakthrough is Battlefield 6's attack-and-defend mode: attackers with a limited pool of lives must hold every flag of a sector at once to push the front line forward, and defenders with unlimited lives try to drain that pool. It launched at 64 players; since Nov 13, 2025 six maps run it at 48, with no EA statement.
-
RushRush is Battlefield 6's 12v12 attack-and-defend mode: attackers with limited lives arm pairs of M-COM stations that explode 30 seconds later, defenders with unlimited lives defuse them, and every destroyed pair moves the fight to the next sector. EA rebuilt every Rush layout after the beta and added Rush to Mirak Valley on Feb 17, 2026.
-
EscalationEscalation is the one new mode Battlefield 6 launched with: two teams of up to 32 fight over a row of flags, holding more of them fills a meter, each filled meter takes a territory and removes a flag, and EA's rule is that the first team to three territories wins. TheGamer's launch guide says two; EA's three is the rule.
-
ObliterationObliteration came back from Battlefield 4 on Jun 9, 2026: up to 64 players race for one neutral bomb and try to plant it on the enemy's M-COM stations, and the first team to destroy all three enemy M-COMs wins. Tactical Obliteration, the renamed Squad Obliteration, followed on Jun 30, 2026 as an 8v8 infantry version where two M-COMs win.
