Campaign Story and Ending
Battlefield 6's story follows Dagger 13 from Pax Armata's attack in Georgia in 2027 to the war's end in Tajikistan in 2028, and ends with the reveal that CIA handler Melissa Mills helped create Pax to give NATO a common enemy. This page explains the plot and the ending, with spoilers.
Battlefield 6's story is a flashback told to the squad's own handler: Dagger 13 tracks down CIA officer Melissa Mills at her home, warns her that Pax is coming for her, and makes her walk back through the war, and by the end they learn she helped build the enemy they were fighting. The setup is EA's (single-player campaign page, Oct 10, 2025): NATO is fracturing, a Coalition of hostile states wages a proxy war through the private army Pax Armata, and the US sends a Marine Raider squad to the flashpoints. The order of events below follows GameRant's explainer and MKIceAndFire's no-commentary run of the whole campaign (Oct 10, 2025). The levels themselves are on Campaign Missions; the people are on Dagger 13 and Characters.
Spoiler warning: every section below this table gives away the plot, and the last four give away the ending.

How the war starts
On Sep 17, 2027, Pax Armata attacks a NATO base in Georgia that is being handed over to it, and Dylan Murphy's unit is caught inside. They blow up the base's servers to keep the data from Pax, and in MKIceAndFire's run the evac helicopter goes down and Murphy is the last of his unit standing ("No one else made it"). A news report then fills in the next year: days after the attack, NATO's Secretary General, Hawthorne, was assassinated in Brussels, Pax claimed it, and several former NATO members joined the coalition backing the private army. GameRant counts 12 countries leaving the alliance.
The data Pax wanted was Project Veles, technology that can blind satellite imagery (GameRant). It drives the first half of the story.
The frame: Mills's house
After the prologue, the game cuts to the present. Mills wonders aloud why Pax would bother with an operator halfway around the world; Gecko reminds her she was put on the team because she is "a hunter", and asks her to start with why she chose Dagger 13: "Take us back to Gibraltar." The missions that follow are the squad's account of the war, interrupted by more scenes in the house. Several reviews counted the flashback structure against the campaign; we think it works better on a second play, once you know what Mills is hiding.
Gibraltar and Cairo
In March 2028, Dagger 13 helps a British squad retake Gibraltar, and Pax's commander, Alexander Kincaid, escapes the city. In June the squad goes to Cairo to pull Fayek Salim, a biometrics chief executive, out of a palace. Mills tells them the asset matters less than his intel. Salim is killed, but his finger still unlocks the data, and it points to a Pax cell in Brooklyn (GameRant; Shacknews).
Back in the frame, the squad presses Mills on what Salim knew. Pax had Project Veles, tech that "blacks out satellite imagery", and the words lead back to where the story began: the program was "on a server in Georgia", the one Murphy's unit blew up.
Brooklyn and the death of Carter
In Brooklyn the squad raids Kincaid's headquarters and learns he planted a mole on the US warship Artemis to turn her missiles on New York. Kincaid and Carter speak, and it is clear the two men knew each other well. Kincaid tells Carter that once you see America from outside, "it just eats everything".
The squad chases the train carrying the missile targeting gear, NATO bombs it on a bridge, and Carter stops most of the missiles. The next day, Jun 15, 2028, Pax hits President Fernandez's motorcade; Dagger 13 gets him out through Prospect Park and the subway (GameRant).
Then Kincaid ambushes Murphy and Carter and kills Carter with a knife (GameRant). In MKIceAndFire's run he spells out the grudge: Carter left him behind years earlier, men laughed as they threw acid over him, and "the man you left behind goes on. That's justice." Earlier, in Cairo, Carter had told Murphy he left Kincaid because he "had my own team to save".
The war turns on that day. Fernandez announces a NATO Global Response Force "to destroy Pax Armata wherever they are entrenched", with operations already under way alongside the allies (GameRant calls it NATO's revival).
Egypt and Tajikistan
In July, Egypt's Unit 777 under Ibrahim Al-Khatib retakes Cairo from Pax in a tank assault. In September, Dagger 13 goes to Tajikistan, where Pax keeps hypersonic missiles armed with NXC, the explosive nano-compound Kincaid gave it (GameRant). The squad knocks out the SAM network that shields the base, ending with the destruction of a dam, and then NATO storms the base itself (Shacknews).
The ending explained
Spoiler: this section reveals the final twist.
In the bunker, the squad corners a wounded Kincaid. Mills, on the radio, orders them to make sure he "can't leave this facility"; Kincaid laughs that she wants him dead because he can talk, and says Pax has had the backing of the CIA all along. As he reaches for his knife, Hemlock shoots him. Mills then orders the bunker bombed with the squad inside, and Dagger 13 escapes by helicopter (GameRant; MKIceAndFire's run).
That is why, in the frame scenes, the squad is at Mills's house at all. GameRant dates the epilogue Sep 23, 2028: the team has learned she tried to bury them as loose ends, and they fight off a Pax team that arrives at her door (whether to rescue her or kill her, the squad cannot tell).
Mills's defense is the game's thesis. She does not deny it: Pax "was sanctioned", built over a generation by political powers, the military-industrial complex and the CIA, because "our country thrives with a common enemy". She calls the order to bomb the squad "the hardest call I've ever had to make in my career".
The squad decides she is too dangerous to hand over. Murphy receives the order, says he knows what he has to do, and the game cuts away; Mills's death is heard as a gunshot, not shown (GameRant). Outside, Gecko says the storm is not over, "it's just a break. Worst is still to come".
What the ending means
Read plainly, the ending says the war was manufactured: Kincaid was a weapon that slipped its handler, and Pax was meant to be the enemy every NATO member could agree on. The squad throws her own logic back at her: a villain everyone can share works only "until one of your carefully cultivated assets takes over". IGN's reviewer found the story "oddly apolitical" for a game about the collapse of NATO, and we agree that the twist arrives too late to change how the missions play: you spend five hours taking orders from Mills and only learn in the last fifteen minutes why you should not have.
IGN's view (Oct 9, 2025): "a fairly straightforward affair", safe, "and as such, it feels like it has nothing of real substance to say."
Is there a sequel hook?
Yes. Gecko's last line promises more, and Mills names allies and a list of operatives inside Pax who survive her. EA's later story material moves the war to the United States, with Pax attacks in New York and California, and REDSEC's Fort Lyndon, a Southern California military site, sits in that continuation; GamingBolt's REDSEC review opens on that link, an incident at Fort Lyndon that "could be a larger attack by the Pax Armada". Some press read more into it: GameRant speculates that Henry Blackburn, the hero of Battlefield 3, could be behind Pax, which nothing in the game confirms.
We think Battlefield Studios will continue Dagger 13's story as a paid expansion or a campaign in the next game, not inside a Battlefield 6 season, because every season so far has added maps, modes and events, never story missions (see Seasons). Our longer bets are on Predictions.
