Classes
Battlefield 6 has four classes, Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon, each with a fixed signature gadget, trait and weapon bonus, two training paths and an active ability. In most modes any class can carry any gun; Closed Weapon playlists keep each class to its signature weapon plus carbines, DMRs and shotguns.
Battlefield 6 has four classes, Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon, and each one is built from a "signature set" that never changes: a signature gadget every loadout of that class carries, a signature trait that works all the time, and a signature weapon type the class handles better than the others. On top of that each class picks one of two training paths and gets an active ability that charges up during a match. Classes came back after Battlefield 2042's specialists, which is why GameSpot's Oct 9, 2025 class guide opens on how they are built; the history is on Battlefield Series. This page compares the four; every gadget and perk is on its own class page: Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon.

The four classes compared
| Assault | Engineer | Support | Recon | |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Signature gadget | Adrenaline Injector | Repair Tool | Supply Bag | Motion Sensor |
| Signature trait | Mission Focused: faster objective progress, faster out of combat for squad spawns | Mechanized Infantry: less explosive damage near friendly vehicles, enemies cannot steal them | Field Sustainment: teammates take health packs from you; revives any teammate | Passive Spot: aiming at enemies spots them |
| Signature weapon | Assault Rifle | SMG (better hip fire) | LMG (no sprint speed penalty) | Sniper Rifle (faster rechamber, less sway) |
| Active ability | Rally Squad | Power Fix | Restock Allies | UAV Overwatch |
| Default training path | Frontliner | Anti-Armor | Combat Medic | Sniper |
| Unlocked training path | Breacher | Combat Engineer | Fire Support | Spec Ops |
| Class grenades | Concussive, Flash | Anti-Tank, Mini Frag | Smoke, Incendiary | Proximity Detector, Throwing Knife |
| Open beta picks (Aug 2025) | 32% | 23% | 26% | 19% |
| 2025 picks, BF6 and REDSEC | 26% | 28% | 27% | 19% |
Sources: EA's Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon pages (Apr 9, 2026); beta picks from EA's post-beta stats as reported by MP1st (Aug 21, 2025); 2025 picks from EA's holiday post (Dec 19, 2025).
The two pick rows are the most telling thing in the table, and we put them side by side because no other page does. In the beta, Assault was the clear favorite at 32%. By the end of 2025, with vehicles, bigger maps and REDSEC in the mix, Engineer had become the most played class and Assault had fallen to third. Recon held 19% in both counts. We think that shift says more about Battlefield 6's maps than about class balance: the beta's small, infantry-heavy maps rewarded the run-and-gun class, and the full game's tanks and helicopters make a launcher the most useful thing a player can carry.
How a class is built
A loadout has a training path, a primary and a secondary weapon, two gadget slots from the class's own list, a throwable, a melee weapon and the signature gadget, which is fixed (EA loadout guide). Every class can take the Frag Grenade; the other grenades belong to one class each, as the table shows. GameSpot's clip lists the same parts and calls the training paths something like subclasses.
Training paths give a passive bonus from the start of a life, then Level 1 and Level 2 bonuses earned inside the match through teamplay and score (EA's Assault page, Apr 9, 2026). One path is open from the start; the second comes from finishing that class's Class Assignment, which also unlocks extra gadgets (EA progression guide). How long that takes is on Progression and Unlocks.
Active abilities charge as you play and give a short boost: Rally Squad shares an adrenaline effect with nearby squadmates, Power Fix makes the Repair Tool work at extra efficiency for 10 seconds, Restock Allies resupplies and heals the people around you, and UAV Overwatch puts a spotting drone over a marked spot. EA's Recon page says the UAV "becomes available late in a match." jackfrags shows each one in his Oct 27, 2025 tips video and the keys for them: 6 on PC, both shoulder buttons on a controller.
Open and Closed weapons
In most playlists any class can equip any primary weapon, and the signature weapon only adds a handling bonus. In Closed Weapon modes, EA says, "players are restricted to selecting the Signature Weapon for the specific chosen Class," and every class may still take a carbine, DMR or shotgun (EA loadout guide). GameSpot calls open weapons the one change that annoyed some players, since older Battlefields tied weapon types to classes.
IGN's Oct 16, 2025 multiplayer review had mixed feelings for the same reason: with any gun on any class, the reviewer was tempted to put a favorite assault rifle on everything, and found the signature bonuses "modest enough that I quickly found myself ignoring them." The gadgets still separate the classes: only an Engineer repairs a tank. Which guns suit which class is on Weapons and Best Loadouts.
We think open weapons were the right default for a game that also has to win over players from other shooters, but the signature bonuses are too small to steer anyone. Support's no-sprint-penalty LMG and Recon's sniper handling are worth having; Assault's faster draw and Engineer's hip-fire control mostly are not, which is one reason Engineers so often run carbines.
Which class should you pick?
EA's own advice is to master one class first, then switch to whatever your squad lacks when it is struggling (EA Squad Tactics, Apr 9, 2026). Squads are four players, ideally one of each class (more on Movement, Squads and Revives). ItalianSpartacus, in his Oct 15, 2025 Assault guide, puts the team-first version plainly: get ahead of your team, duck into cover and let them spawn on you, because "the objective is all that really matters."
- New to Battlefield: Assault. GameSpot calls it "the most basic beginner friendly" class: a rifle, objective speed and a beacon.
- Want the most points: Support or Engineer. Revives, resupplies and repairs all score, and ItalianSpartacus notes those two usually top the scoreboard.
- Maps with tanks and aircraft: Engineer. EA's new player guide names Engineer and Recon as the best classes against vehicles (EA, Oct 10, 2025).
- Good aim, patient play: Recon, which also spots for the whole team without firing a shot.
You are never locked in for a whole life. A dropped kit on the ground shows its class icon, and picking it up switches your class mid-fight, which jackfrags uses to grab a launcher when a vehicle rolls up.
If you spawn with the wrong kit, stay still and change it: Y on PC, the view button on Xbox, the touchpad on PlayStation 5. That swaps your gear without redeploying and without spending a ticket, as jackfrags shows.
Season 5 class changes are for REDSEC only
The class rework that came with Season 5 on Oct 13, 2026 applies to the REDSEC battle royale, not to Battlefield 6 multiplayer. EA's Oct 1, 2026 post lists it under "Class changes (REDSEC)" and says the aim is "one strong, identifiable field training for each class" (EA). In REDSEC, update 2.1.1.0 removed the Hazmat Breacher and Drone Operator paths, gave every class one path with four levels, fixed each class's starting gadgets and tied several perks to armor plates (2.1.1.0 notes, Oct 12, 2026). Multiplayer keeps the two paths per class described above. Each class page has its REDSEC levels in a section of its own.
EA said on Oct 21, 2026 that the Assault class and the Support Pouch are "under review," with no timeline (EA community update). We think the Assault review lands with Season 6 in 2027 (see Roadmap and Season 6) rather than in a Season 5 phase, and that it touches the Deploy Beacon or Rally Squad rather than the trait, since Assault's slide from 32% to 26% of picks points to a class with too little to do on vehicle maps. That is our prediction; see Predictions.
Frequently asked questions
How many classes are in Battlefield 6?
Four: Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon. All four are open from Rank 1 (EA progression guide).
Can any class use any weapon?
Yes in Open Weapon playlists, which are most of them. In Closed Weapon playlists each class is held to its signature weapon type, plus carbines, DMRs and shotguns for everyone.
Which class can revive?
Any class can revive a squadmate. Support can revive any teammate, revives faster and carries the Defibrillator (EA Squad Tactics). See Movement, Squads and Revives.
Which class is best against tanks?
Engineer, with launchers, mines and the Anti-Tank Grenade; Recon helps by marking vehicles with the Laser Designator or Tracer Dart so launchers lock faster.
How do I unlock the second training path?
Finish the class's Class Assignment. Since Oct 17, 2025, assignments that once needed Career Ranks 20, 23 and 26 open at ranks 10, 15 and 20 (Wccftech, Oct 17, 2025).
Did Season 5 change the classes?
Only in REDSEC. The four-level training paths and fixed gadgets of update 2.1.1.0 are battle royale rules; multiplayer classes are unchanged by that rework, as of Nov 8, 2026.
