Progression and Unlocks
Battlefield 6 progression runs on Career Rank, which unlocks a functional item at every rank from 2 to 50 and cosmetics after, plus assignments that unlock the last guns, gadgets and training paths, and weapon and vehicle mastery to rank 50. EA has sped it up several times since launch, most in March 2026.
Battlefield 6 unlocks things three ways: Career Rank, which every match raises; assignments, which are challenge sets that unlock the last guns, gadgets and training paths; and mastery, a rank for each weapon and vehicle that unlocks its attachments and camos (EA's progression guide, Apr 14, 2026). Everyone starts at Rank 1 with all four classes. Espresso's Oct 9, 2025 launch guide lays out the split for weapons: the first guns of each category come with rank, and the final two or three come from assignments. This page covers ranks, assignments, mastery and XP; the seasonal pass is on Battle Pass and Battlefield Pro.

Career Rank
Career Rank is the main level. Each rank from 2 to 50 unlocks a functional item, from 52 to 100 a cosmetic every two ranks, and after 100 the rank keeps climbing with "Colonel" status and no stated maximum. There is no prestige reset. Extra loadout slots arrive at ranks 8, 12, 15 and 18, and 15-minute Career and Battle Pass double XP boosts are handed out between ranks 3 and 22 (EA).
XP comes from almost everything: kills and assists, revives, squad spawns, spotting, objectives and finishing the match, and using a weapon or vehicle earns Hardware XP for it passively (EA). Espresso's Oct 13, 2025 testing found the score on the scoreboard converts one to one into XP, plus a bonus for staying to the end of a match and another for winning.
Small multipliers stack on top. In the same test: +5% for owning Battlefield 6, +5% in a party of two and +10% in a party of three or four, and another 5% for PlayStation Plus members partying together, up to about +20% in all. These were measured at launch and are Espresso's figures, not EA's.
Assignments and challenges
Assignments are challenge sets done in order. EA lists four kinds of challenge: Class Assignments, Weapon Assignments, Seasonal Assignments and Seasonal Catch-Up Challenges (EA). Espresso's guide splits the launch menu into initiation sets (XP boosts and basics), weapon sets, class sets (extra gadgets and each class's second training path) and unit sets (soldier skins tied to modes).
Each class has two Class Assignments, which unlock gadgets, the second training path and a loadout slot. For Assault they unlock the Deploy Beacon and the Incendiary-Round Shotgun (EA). The paths themselves are on each class page: Assault, Engineer, Support, Recon.
At launch, weapon assignments opened only past Career Rank 23 and class assignments at 20. The clip shows the assault rifle set as an example: deal rifle damage to unlock the KORD 6P67, then get kills with it and long-range kills to unlock the NVO-228E, and so on to the L85A3.
Those gates were the most criticized part of progression at launch. IGN's Oct 16, 2025 multiplayer review said the requirements were "too high": you could not even begin the class challenges for the alternate training paths until level 20, "which could take dozens of hours," and powerful gear like the Deploy Beacon sat behind them.
EA moved fast on this. On Oct 17, 2025, a week after launch, assignments that had needed Career Ranks 20, 23 and 26 were moved to ranks 10, 15 and 20, with EA writing: "We've heard your feedback around the pace of progression" (Wccftech, Oct 17, 2025). On Nov 5, 2025 it made over 90 challenge adjustments: the Assault beacon-spawn step fell from 50 to 5, the Support revive step from 200 to 60, and an assault rifle damage step from 10,000 to 3,000 (EA on Steam).
Guns that came with a season's battle pass usually get a later way in: in Season 2, the GGH-22, Mini Scout and SOR-300C from Season 1 were set to unlock at Career Rank 20 (EA, Feb 12, 2026). Which gun came when is on Weapons.
Weapon and vehicle mastery
Every weapon and vehicle has its own Hardware XP path and rank. Weapon ranks unlock attachments, Weapon Packages and camos, and ranks 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 award Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Elite badges (EA). Espresso's guide shows a reward every 10 levels at launch, with the mastery package at 50 for weapons and the Gold Standard skin at 50 for vehicles.
Weapon Packages are preset builds with their own look, and changing the attachments changes the look; camos apply over any build, and unlocking one for a weapon unlocks it for all weapons. The Mar 17, 2026 update moved camo unlocks from mastery ranks 20, 30 and 40 to 5, 15 and 30 (EA). Attachments themselves are on Attachments.
Badges go on your player card for weapons, vehicles and classes. Weapon and vehicle badges come from use; class badges follow the assignment chain. EA counted 212 weapon and vehicle badges at launch and 228 for a full Total Badge Rating, with Accolade Dog Tags in Metal, Bronze and Gold.

TheXclusiveAce, on May 6, 2026, measured what those changes meant for one gun. At launch, he had calculated, getting a weapon to rank 40 and every attachment took roughly 1,000 kills without double XP, and he saw many players name that grind as the reason they quit.
He then walks through the fixes: the first-20-ranks cut, the new XP curve in Season 2, "roughly 15% faster overall" to mastery, and the Season 2 Phase 3 change that pays weapon XP for simply having the gun in your hands.
In his own test with the L110, from rank 1 with no double XP, in Breakthrough and other large modes, rank 20 took about 120 kills, rank 30 about 250 and rank 40 about 520 in total, in 3 hours 22 minutes of play. That is his run, not an EA figure, and it halves the launch grind.
We think progression is now in a fair place, and the numbers back that up: a full set of attachments went from about 1,000 kills to about 520, and the assignment gates from rank 26 to rank 20 at most. In our view EA's mistake was the order, not the design: the slow gates landed in the first month, when most new players decide whether to stay, and the fixes came after many had left, which matches the drop in the Steam Player Count.
XP rules in Portal and REDSEC
Portal experiences with AI backfill or casual settings do not track stats, and EA drained most XP from farm servers in October 2025 after saying many were "created primarily to earn XP, inflate player stats, and earn special accolades through defeating bots" (EA on Steam, Oct 17, 2025). Bots give reduced XP wherever they appear. Since the Season 5 server browser, Official servers (studio or player-hosted) give full XP and progression and Custom servers give partial XP (EA, Nov 3, 2026).
Progress made in the free REDSEC battle royale carries over to Battlefield 6 (EA). The Game of the Year Edition, out Oct 13, 2026, includes an Ultimate Shortcut Kit with "instant mastery of all 4 classes and fully progressed weapons" (EA); see Price and Editions.
