Contaminated
Contaminated is a Battlefield 6 map around a German airbase on a Bavarian mountainside, added on Feb 17, 2026 as Season 2's launch map. It sits between Eastwood and Mirak Valley in size, has land vehicles and helicopters, hidden routes, rockfalls and VL-7 gas, and is the first half of Operation Augur.
Contaminated is Battlefield 6's Season 2 launch map: a German airbase on a European mountainside, where Pax Armata pushes into a military installation in the Bavarian Alps, released on Feb 17, 2026 with every combat size, land vehicles and helicopters. It launched with the VL-7 Strike mode, whose gas makes you see enemies who are not there, as jackfrags showed in a preview match published the day before launch (Feb 16, 2026). Below it lies Hagental Base, and the Operation Augur mode joins the two. Facts are as of Nov 8, 2026.

Where it is and how big it is
EA put Contaminated between Eastwood and Mirak Valley in size, comparable to St. Quentin Scar or Arras. jackfrags summed it up the same way after that preview: "It's a big map, but it's not like really big", with plenty of elevation, "quite fun for helicopters". It was tested in Battlefield Labs from January 2026, and after launch EA said it was well received and that its airspace had been expanded (Mar 2, 2026).
The map runs from a hamlet and trenches up through bunkers and hangars to the base's entrance in the mountain, with what jackfrags called "subterranean areas" to fight through. He liked it, and still asked why Season 2 opened with a single map.
Sectors and points by mode
- Conquest uses the open middle of the map; jackfrags did not think the woodland on one side is part of it (Conquest).
- Escalation adds the woodland, and in his match the gas was absent from its points (Escalation).
- Breakthrough runs the same five sectors that open Operation Augur (Breakthrough).
- VL-7 Strike was its own playlist from Feb 17, 2026 (Limited-Time Modes).
EA's Operation Augur guide (Apr 13, 2026) describes Contaminated's five Breakthrough sectors, with a VL-7 strike after every capture but the last:
| Sector | Objectives | What EA says |
|---|---|---|
| Hamlet | One, a house ringed by trenches | Both sides get light transports and quads; NATO also an LTV and an IFV |
| Siegfried Line and Hagental Tunnel | A in ruined bunkers, B in the tunnel | Defenders get an IFV; the tunnel's north side can be breached and the mountainside can crumble, opening a route between the objectives |
| Maintenance Hangar | A at the trenches, B in the hangar | VL-7 does the most damage here; Support resupplies mask filters |
| Ramp and Apron | A on the ramp, B on the apron | Guard towers cover B; long-range duels on open hills |
| Hagental Base Entrance | One, among bunkers and hangars | Bunkers can be climbed; vehicles parked here draw Engineer mines |
An earlier Steam post on Augur listed four Contaminated sectors without the Siegfried Line, so the count may differ by version. The second half is on Hagental Base.
VL-7 gas
VL-7 is a psychoactive smoke that does no damage but causes hallucinations; every soldier gets a mask, and extra masks and filters lie around the map. Without the mask jackfrags saw "shadow people" marked as enemies and heard the audio warp. With it on, the hallucinations stop, but the filter runs out and new ones come from Support ammo bags. Unlike Battlefield 1's masks, you can still aim down sights. He also called the gas "a bit of a gimmick".
Destruction, rockfalls and secrets
The mountainside can be shot down. jackfrags dropped rocks on enemies with the Little Bird's rockets, then flew it through a gap in the rock as in the trailer. Rockfalls also come down to gunfire and the railgun, and he expected one to guard a Breakthrough objective.
Walls marked for breaching open new routes into objectives, and some hide secret rooms. Valves that puff smoke and a light puzzle that he suspected unlocks a secret weapon point to easter eggs. Breeze-block walls go down too (Destruction).
A missile in one hangar explodes when shot, a bigger blast than the 500 kg bomb nearby.
Vehicles
Contaminated launched beside the AH-6 Little Bird scout helicopter, and jackfrags found its rockets "insane" against infantry; EA's Update 2.1.1.0 on Oct 12, 2026 later raised the light rocket hits it takes to go down from 4 to 7. A bike ramp from the trailer is on the map, and the dirt bike arrived in the middle of Season 2 (Helicopters, Tanks and Ground Vehicles).
Tips for each side
- Wear the mask in VL-7, and stay near a Support. Filters run out (Support).
- Watch the deployment edges. jackfrags found you can see into spawn areas easily and camp landing helicopters.
- Carry explosives. Blowing the marked walls gives a new way into most objectives (Engineer, Assault).
- Attackers in Breakthrough get extra vehicles in reinforcement battalions, EA notes; use them at the Hamlet before the trenches.
- Pilots: the elevation gives helicopters places to dip and repair, more than on flatter maps.
Reception
The map was a success with players. EA reported that by Jul 2, 2026 Railway to Golmud had over 16 million hours played, about 2.5 times Contaminated, which by our math puts Contaminated at roughly 6.4 million hours against Golmud's 16 million, and Kotaku's one-year look said fans liked its big vistas, elevation changes and size (Oct 23, 2026).
What we think
We think Contaminated is the most underrated map in Battlefield 6: it was the first post-launch map with real elevation and real size, and it set up the one mode that tells a story across two maps. VL-7 was the weak part, as jackfrags guessed, and we expect it to stay a limited-time mutator. Our prediction: when Operation Augur returns, Contaminated's Breakthrough sectors will be the version most players remember, more than the Conquest layout.
Frequently asked questions
When was Contaminated added?
On Feb 17, 2026, as the launch map of Season 2, after a delay that moved the season from January.
How big is Contaminated?
EA puts it between Eastwood and Mirak Valley, comparable to Battlefield 1's St. Quentin Scar or Battlefield V's Arras.
What does VL-7 do?
It causes hallucinations and does no damage. A gas mask stops them until its filter runs out.
Does Contaminated have jets?
EA lists land vehicles and helicopters for it, not jets.
What is Operation Augur?
A limited-time mode where NATO attacks through Contaminated's sectors and then into Hagental Base. See Limited-Time Modes.

Hagental BaseHagental Base is Battlefield 6's underground, infantry-only map in Bavaria, added on Mar 17, 2026 with Season 2's Nightfall phase. It is a linear run of tunnels, server rooms and a hangar with five Conquest points, breakable walls and hidden flanks, and the second half of the Operation Augur mode.
-
ConquestConquest is Battlefield 6's 64-player flag mode: two teams of 32 capture lettered objectives, and a team loses when its tickets (1,000 by EA's default) run out from deaths without revives and from the other side holding more flags. Holding every flag for a minute wins outright.
-
EscalationEscalation is the one new mode Battlefield 6 launched with: two teams of up to 32 fight over a row of flags, holding more of them fills a meter, each filled meter takes a territory and removes a flag, and EA's rule is that the first team to three territories wins. TheGamer's launch guide says two; EA's three is the rule.
-
BreakthroughBreakthrough is Battlefield 6's attack-and-defend mode: attackers with a limited pool of lives must hold every flag of a sector at once to push the front line forward, and defenders with unlimited lives try to drain that pool. It launched at 64 players; since Nov 13, 2025 six maps run it at 48, with no EA statement.

Limited-Time ModesBattlefield 6's limited-time modes so far are Ice Lock (Dec 9, 2025), VL-7 Strike (Feb 17, 2026), Nightfall (Mar 17, 2026), Operation Augur (Apr 14, 2026), Top Gun: Carrier Strike (Aug 18 to Oct 13, 2026) and the Dead Space crossover Marker Incursion (Oct 20 to Nov 10, 2026). Operation High Roller is next, with Frozen Aces on Dec 8, 2026.

DestructionBattlefield 6 uses tactical destruction: most walls, light buildings and cover break in pre-scored chunks under explosives, vehicles, sledgehammers or sustained fire, while metal frames and many ground floors stay up. Season 5 added set-piece collapses such as the Vegas Strip dome and sign, the Area 51 control tower and, from Nov 10, 2026, European Casino's tower.
