Railway to Golmud

Railway to Golmud is Battlefield 6's rebuild of Battlefield 4's Golmud Railway, added on May 12, 2026 with Season 3 and moved to Tajikistan. It has seven Conquest points, a capturable train that now drives toward the enemy HQ, every vehicle type and the largest airspace in the game, and it was the most-played new map of 2026.

Railway to Golmud is the Battlefield 4 classic rebuilt for Battlefield 6, the "biggest official Battlefield 6 map yet" when it arrived, with the largest airspace of any multiplayer map, released on May 12, 2026 with Season 3. Its centerpiece is the train, which jackfrags found "a lot bigger now" at EA's preview, among a line-up of vehicles at the spawn, and which now rolls toward the enemy's HQ once your team takes it. Players spent over 16 million hours on it by Jul 2, 2026, about 2.5 times Contaminated. Facts are as of Nov 8, 2026.

Quick facts

Added Season 3, May 12, 2026
Original Golmud Railway, Battlefield 4 (Oct 29, 2013)
Setting Tajikistan (moved from China)
Size Several square kilometers; bigger than Mirak Valley
Conquest points Seven, including the train
Vehicles Tanks, transports, quads, helicopters, jets, AA
Hours played Over 16 million by Jul 2, 2026 (EA)
Largest map since Tsuru Reef (Jul 21, 2026)

Where it is and how it is laid out

The map moved from China to Tajikistan to fit the NATO and Pax Armata story; Mirak Valley and Liberation Peak are in the same country. EA says it covers several square kilometers, far more than Mirak Valley, the largest launch map. It pulled the north and south edges in by about 100 meters in total for balance, removed the raised HQ positions of 2013, and filled the no-man's land with stone fences and foliage after Battlefield V's Panzerstorm.

The Conquest objectives form an anchor shape, each hidden from the next. A zipline crosses a big gap up to the top of the map, and the area around it is "a lot more built up now. Way more cover", in jackfrags' words.

The mountains are new too. jackfrags went looking for Battlefield 4's "Yeti" rock and could not find it, because "these mountains weren't here previously".

The seven points

EA's developer map guide (Apr 28, 2026) names them; tactical modes use only one or two.

Point What it is
Construction Site Replaces Battlefield 4's School; a strong position against the high Village and a defensive point in Breakthrough and Rush
Village Rebuilt on the old road plan; debris stays as cover after vehicles level the houses
VIP Compound A comms tower complex with red roofs and a scout helicopter on a walled helipad, moved off the central road
Train Moves between objectives (below)
Bridge Construction Road pieces, earth mounds and equipment; ramps for fast vehicles; near NATO's HQ
Warehouse Two multi-story warehouses joined by walkways, with rooftops and skylights; an AA tank nearby
Farm A walled compound and two-story farmhouse near Pax Armata's HQ

The high ground is a sniper's map. jackfrags climbed another zipline to "a beautiful sniper spot" that looks down on the factory, beside the new power station, and expected Golmud to be "a really good map for long-range sniping".

The train

In Battlefield 4 a captured train rolled toward your own HQ. Now it moves toward the enemy HQ, so whoever holds it gets a spawn deep in enemy ground. It has cover carts, parkour routes and an engine at each end, and EA's playtests saw far more players riding it than in 2013. jackfrags ran its whole length while it moved through fields of poppies.

Vehicles and air

Every vehicle type spawns, and jets finally have room. jackfrags flew far from the action before hitting the boundary: "Now we're talking, DICE." EA says jets can fly around the peaks and dogfight in valleys and glaciers, and HQ anti-air now protects spawns within 95 meters of the turret (Jets, Vehicles).

Tank play suits it. Season 3's vehicle handling overhaul landed with the map, and jackfrags found tanks tougher and harder to disable: "Epic tank battles. I love it." The big bridge, though, does not come down, as far as he could tell (Tanks and Ground Vehicles, Destruction).

Easter eggs

Northeast of E sits a wrecked tank marked "2014 peekaboo", a nod to a famous Battlefield 4 clip filmed on this map, with a dog tag on top that jackfrags could not yet pick up. He also found a letter S hidden in the map and a golf cart parked at the north end.

Tips for each side

EA's guide gives nine tips; the main ones:

  • Hold the Construction Site and Village, with the VIP Compound close by, to control Conquest.
  • After taking the train, grab Bridge Construction (near NATO's HQ) or the Farm (near Pax Armata's) for an extra ticket bleed.
  • On the train, bring an SMG, carbine or shotgun (SMGs, Shotguns and Pistols).
  • Jets: use the deeper valleys to escape ground lock-ons.
  • Infantry: use the new flanks on foot or in small vehicles, smoke your captures, and take explosives for tanks; Assault players should run a spawn beacon (Assault).
  • Against entrenched Recon, destroy their building rather than duel them (Recon).
  • Practice the Village in Domination and Squad Deathmatch, which use it.

History: from Battlefield 4 to Battlefield 6

Golmud Railway launched with Battlefield 4 on Oct 29, 2013 as its largest launch map by land area, with a train carrying machine-gun turrets. EA said in Season 2 the remake was coming "beyond this season" while it was tested in Battlefield Labs, where late changes to sightlines, vehicle counts and HQ size followed a playtest in which one team camped near its HQ anti-air. Two of the original Battlefield 4 level artists worked on the rebuild, which EA said was "being rebuilt for today's Battlefield, not simply ported forward". Hotfix 1.3.1.5 on May 26, 2026 fixed Golmud spawns. See Season 3 and Battlefield Series.

What we think

We think Railway to Golmud is the map that saved Battlefield 6's first year. jackfrags called it "a classic Battlefield sandbox map" and said the game needed one, and the 16 million hours prove players agreed. The train change is the smartest single design decision in the remakes: it turns a gimmick into a forward spawn worth fighting for. We expect EA's next remake to copy this approach (a big classic, rebuilt with cover and a new mechanic) rather than the shrink that Operation Firestorm got, and we think the hidden dog tag will turn out to be a collectible tied to a later event.

Frequently asked questions

When was Railway to Golmud added?

On May 12, 2026, with Season 3.

Is Railway to Golmud the biggest map?

It was the biggest when it arrived. Tsuru Reef, added on Jul 21, 2026, is now larger.

Why is it in Tajikistan?

EA moved it from China to Tajikistan to fit Battlefield 6's NATO against Pax Armata story.

Which way does the train go?

Toward the enemy HQ of the team that holds it, the reverse of Battlefield 4.

Can you destroy the bridge?

Not in jackfrags' tests at the preview; the village houses and the power station do come down.
