Operation Firestorm

Operation Firestorm is Battlefield 6's remake of the Battlefield 3 oil field map, a launch map since Oct 10, 2025 in the Legacy theater. It is a combined-arms map with tanks, helicopters and jets, five Conquest flags where Battlefield 3 had three, and much more cover than the original.

Operation Firestorm is the Battlefield 3 map remade for Battlefield 6: a burning oil field where infantry, tanks, helicopters and jets fight, and the only map in the launch lineup's Legacy theater. It has been in the game since launch on Oct 10, 2025. The layout keeps Battlefield 3's three Conquest flags in place and adds two more across the road, as SammyBoiii shows on both overhead maps in his Sep 19, 2025 comparison. As of Nov 8, 2026 it is one of 18 maps on EA's maps page; the full list is on Maps.

Where it is and how it is laid out

The map is a desert oil field and refinery that the PlayStation Blog's hands-on called a huge combined-arms battlefield, with tall smokestacks as sniper nests and long sightlines (Sep 17, 2025). It is smaller than the 2011 map. LevelCap, who played it at EA's preview, found it "much smaller and a bit more claustrophobic", with the old sniper hills gone and the outer objectives closer together, and he said DICE should have remade a different map rather than shrink this one.

The overall shape is the same as Battlefield 3's: a road through the middle, the refinery and its central tower on one side, warehouses and the barracks side on the other. SammyBoiii felt it was "a tiny bit bigger" between the flags than his memory of 2011, with more players to spread out, and says plainly he did not measure it. We think the two views are not as far apart as they sound: the playable area shrank at its edges while the space between the flags grew a little.

Points by mode

In Conquest the map has five flags. A and B sit where they were in Battlefield 3 and look nearly identical; the one change SammyBoiii found at A is that the old crane is gone. B is the most faithful part of the remake.

C, the refinery, plays the same but is packed with new cover, especially along the road. It is also the first sector of Breakthrough, which explains why it was filled in. In SammyBoiii's words, he was shocked how little cover the 2011 version had once he went back to it.

D and E are on the far side of the road. The buildings were there in 2011 but held no flags. D lost its crane too, and E is a walled military barracks that today's vaulting lets you enter over the barriers, not only through its gates. SammyBoiii adds that the D and E flags first appeared in Battlefield 4's version of the map.

Vehicles, destruction and set pieces

Firestorm carries every vehicle class: main battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles on the roads, attack and transport helicopters, and jets overhead (Vehicles). LevelCap enjoyed the warehouse firefights, broke into buildings with the sledgehammer to make his own doors, and found medium-range tank battles even on the smaller map. EA and the PlayStation Blog both present Firestorm as a showcase for the new destruction, with many buildings to fight in and break into (Destruction).

The open desert is no longer open. A trench with pipeline runs alongside the main road, and cars, trucks, rocks and earth banks now break up the D and E side, which was a "barren road in the desert" in 2011.

The tall tower near the middle now has ladders to the top. In Battlefield 3 you reached it only by bailing out of a jet or helicopter. Anyone climbing is exposed the whole way up. The fire burning at the tower's top, which gave the map its name, is lit from the start of every round in Battlefield 6.

Tips for each side

  • Attackers in Breakthrough: the refinery is the hardest first sector. Use smoke and the new cover along the road, and send a squad around through the warehouses rather than up the main road (Movement, Squads and Revives).
  • Defenders: the tower and smokestacks see most of the map. A Recon on the tower is strong but easy to spot (Recon).
  • Conquest: we think the refinery at C is the flag that decides most rounds, since it is the most built-up point and sits between both sides of the road; D and E across the road pull the enemy's tanks over open ground to retake them.
  • Armor: LevelCap found the EOD bot "legitimately good at destroying tanks" on Firestorm, so keep an Engineer near your tank (Engineer).
  • Pilots: the map is smaller than in 2011, so there is less room to break off; see Jets and Helicopters.

History: from Battlefield 3 to Battlefield 6

Operation Firestorm shipped with Battlefield 3 on Oct 25, 2011. Battlefield 4 brought it back as Operation Firestorm 2014, the version that first added the D and E flags, as SammyBoiii notes. Battlefield 6 is its third outing, and EA introduced it as "the classic Battlefield 3 map returns". It was the first of the remakes in Battlefield 6, followed by Railway to Golmud in Season 3, Cairo Bazaar and Wake Island. See Battlefield Series for the older games.

What we think

We think Firestorm is the right kind of remake but the wrong size. SammyBoiii's flag-by-flag tour shows the core of the 2011 map survived, and the new cover makes C and the road far more playable than the bare original. LevelCap's point stands, though: the old map's charm was the long drive between flags and the danger of open ground, and that is mostly gone. We think the 64-player Breakthrough, which EA kept on Firestorm when it cut other maps to 48, shows the studio knows this map needs room. We expect Firestorm to get the same kind of edge rework that EA has announced for Blackwell Fields and New Sobek City before Season 6, more likely than a fresh remake.

Frequently asked questions

Is Operation Firestorm the same as in Battlefield 3?

The layout is close: flags A and B sit where they did in 2011 and look nearly identical. The map is smaller at its edges, it has two more Conquest flags (D and E), much more cover, ladders up the central tower and a fire burning on the tower from the start.

Is Operation Firestorm a launch map?

Yes. It has been in Battlefield 6 since Oct 10, 2025, as the one map in the Legacy theater.

Does Operation Firestorm have jets?

Yes. EA lists infantry, tanks, helicopters and jets on it; it is one of the launch maps with every vehicle type.

How many players play Breakthrough on Operation Firestorm?

64, as of the mid-November 2025 change that cut most other Breakthrough maps to 48.

Which other old maps came back?

Railway to Golmud (Battlefield 4), Cairo Bazaar (Battlefield 3's Grand Bazaar) and Wake Island (a series classic since 1942).
